Only a fair recovery run ... not great.  It was interrupted by the "Geriatric Track Police" at my local gym.  "Local Gym" is a little bit of a stretch for this place.  It's really just a glorified Community Walking Center.  It has a nice aquatic area, smallish weight room, adequate treamills, and a servicable track. For some reason the track gets 60% of its "wear & tear" by those 60 and over.  But it's cheap and close!  It's only about $15/month for residents of Lee's Summit, and only about 1.5 miles from my house.

So I'm cruising along on about mile three this morning, listening to The Zac Brown Band, mindin' my own ... on the furthest outside of three lanes, which is designated for runners.  Walkers are supposed to keep to the inside, but they rarely do because apparently "POSTED SIGNS" appear as invisible to the naked eye ultra-violet images, or simply cannot be understood, by those over 60 in these parts! All of the sudden this elderly lady starts yelling at me right in the middle of "As She's Walkin' Away" featuring Alan Jackson, saying something about the outside lane being for runners and that people were cutting her off or something.  I swear to you I never stepped foot on the inside lanes.  I just said "sorry", even though I really don't think her rant was meant for me.

At that point, another guy - about my age and build - cut right in front of her.  (I think I must have been guilty by runner association in this lady's mind.)  After this earth-shattering turn of events, she immediately "ran" down stairs and got one of the staff members to give this guy a "good talking to".  The staff member also stopped me and asked me about the whole incident.  Once again I stopped my music, I think this time is was "Chicken Fried" or "Free". I explained to her what I had seen, and that I really just wanted to get my workout in and get gone.

It was frustrating, because after 28 miles yesterday, I really just wanted to get a slow, smooth 7-10 miles in and go home and nap.  I had to stop and start three different times for this little lane dispute.  So dumb.

All in all, I feel really good after yesterday's run.  My legs feel great ... but I'm really energy depleted.  Tomorrow will probably be when more, if any, soreness sets in.  For some reason, the older I get, two days after a workout are more of a problem than the day after ... weird???
Try not to yell at anyone at the gym, and ...
Be Great Today!

  1. Aw man, I hate conflict and bad energy on a run. Hard to get the mojo going. BTW, I actually posted something on my Blog that you might like :-)

  2. Bummer! It's ok, get some rest and then your legs will feel strong again!

  3. I'm the same way... If I get sore, it will be the worst 48 hours after the fact.

  4. Haha! Great story. Sorry about your run. Why not just run outside for the recovery run also? Awesome job on the 28 miler too. Have you thought of trying an Ultra? I think you would kill it!
