50 States & Maniacs ... Yes or No???

I would really love everyone's opinion on something ...

I've ran enough marathons in different states (11) to qualify for the 50 States Marathon Club.  And in October, if I can complete back-to-back marathons on Saturday & Sunday, I can qualify for the Marathon Maniacs.  Should I sign up to join them?

On one hand, it would be pretty cool to be in both of these organizations ... but on the other hand, is it worth it?  I'm not a big "club" guy ... really more of a loner!  But it would be pretty cool to meet some new running people who have accomplished similar goals.

Have any of you joined a group like this, and if not ... would you?  I see both of their booths at almost every race, and of course many runners wear their shirts and singlets when running - but what do you think?

If you are already a member of these groups, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.  I'm not necessarily looking for a sales pitch, just kicking around the idea.  Thanks for your input!
... be great today!

  1. I guess the question is what is your motivation for completing your goals?

  2. Here's my opinion...in Fargo I ran almost the entire race near a maniac. The camaraderie he had with other maniacs was really cool. They just waved at each other, but it was really cool (like how all motorcyclists nod/wave at each other). I see the same with 50 states people. Usually the 2 overlap anyway. Would you buy and wear a maniac shirt or singlet?
If it motivates you, gives you more encouragement and boosts your ego (because we all love our ego boosted sometimes), then go for it.
(PS- I'll qualify for the lowest level of Maniac after I run Minneapolis in a week and a half :)

  3. I saw a few Marathon Maniacs on my Trail Half I did last weekend. They looked pretty happy! Might as well, why not!?

  6. For some reason, I don't see you joining either of those groups. You seem like a runner that likes to meet up with people at races, but then you run your own race. Just doesn't seem to fit your personality for whatever reason to join the clubs. You have to pay fees to join the clubs though right? I guess this is what would keep me from joining a club like that.

What if your made your own running technical shirt to wear at your races? With your blog name on the front or back or something? I know nike stores can make shirts like that, and likely a bunch of other stores too.

  7. I don't see you as a member based on what you have posted on your blog. But, I have heard you can save some decent money on registration fees if you join so it may be worth it.

  8. Its up to you, really. I just learned about Marathon Maniacs, but there seems to be a ton of ways to get in as part of the club. Sounds like it more or less a badge of honor club, like Ironman is for triathlon.

  9. You kinda strike me as a 'wolfpack of one' guy when it comes to your running. If it were me I might opt for the 50-state one since that's something that takes a lot more time and planning to accomplish (in terms of the logistics and actual running of the races, not the training). I've seen a few maniacs at marathons, but it had nothing to do with back-to-back races.

  10. I think it's a personal decision. Personally it doesn't appeal to me, but if you're remotely interested I'd say give it a try.

  11. I am trying to get into the Half Fanatic Club. It is more of a goal for me to see if I can run back to back halfs...

I say why not! But I like to wear my accomplishments...

  12. currently neither club really interests me, but I may eventually run a marathon in all the states ?? (outside of the club). Also, while I'm not interested today, tomorrow is a different day.

  14. I'm a lone wolf runner and a general non-joiner, too (is this a Missouri thing??). But for a big and unusual goal like yours, even I might join a club. I'm on the fence--but curious about what you will ultimately decide.

  15. I thought you were already a maniac! ... =D

I don't know a ton about the groups, but I might go more for the 50 staters. I bet there are many people who are in both.

  16. It sounds like you already meet the criteria. So, it's just if you feel like having the camraderie and tee shirt or just knowing that you ARE a maniac : )

  17. I like goals like this (the 50 states one in particular.) I decided to do a race in every county in my state because it was more doable. Had a blast doing it and saw more of my state. (I know Vermont is small but I haven't seen it all.) But I was in a club of one.
