Everyone is typically soooo kind with their comments in the bloggo-world. Take for example this weekend ... I usually don't write negative or "venting" type posts, but I had something on Saturday I had to get off of my chest. Y'all ran to the rescue and supported me with
"yeah, that's right's" and
"we feel ya man's" ... pretty cool!
But based on some of your comments, some of you also seem to think that because I run like a thousand miles a week, and
ran fast enough
ONCE to make it to Boston, that I am some sort of running authority or something ...
BUT YOU COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG!!! I constantly commit running faux pas! Here are a few of my most note worthy ...
- From 2006-2008 I ran with size 10-1/2 shoes because I thought they would make me lighter and faster (my foot is an 11-1/2 to 12!) Result ... a two year case of Morton's Neuroma! Brilliant!!!
|
My actual foot and shoes! |
- I read an article once that denounced stretching for runners ... so I thought I would test the theory. I didn't stretch for about a 6 month period before or after running. Result ... my only real bout with ITB pain that lasted about 2 months and drastically affected my Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon! Smooth!!!
|
Even babies know they should stretch ... and they're stupid! |
- I run comfortably at 7:30-8:00/miles, but in my first marathon, The 2009 Little Rock Marathon, I ran my first mile at 6:30 and my second at 6:59 ... ummm, I hit the wall at mile 14! Very well thought out!!!
|
Reenactment of 1st two miles of Little Rock |
- I tried to run the 2009 Kansas City Marathon without ANY WATER! I had read that some elite athletes have tried it ... so genius here thought he would too ... crashed at 22 with cramps! Result ... bought a CamelBak! Soooooo smart!!!
|
Water ... wat... |
- I didn't know that the tradition with the girls of Wellesley College at Boston was to KISS THEM for good luck ... I thought it was the other way around. When I ran through the scream tunnel, I motioned to one of the young ladies and pointed to my cheek as if to say "Kiss me here!" She literally dropped her sign, put her hands up, turned red, covered her mouth and laughingly screamed, "Noooooo!" The two runners behind me died laughing ... I just pulled my hat down and ran faster! Nice one PERV!!!
|
Wheeeeeeew ... KISS ME!!! (Unless you're a 42 year old perv!!!) |
So as you can see, I am still VERY MUCH a work in progress as far as running goes. I was thinking about carrying a baton and marching like a drum major for the first two miles of this weekend's marathon ... I've heard it really helps with high knee kicks! Any ideas?
... be great today!
bahahha! classic!
ReplyDeleteThis post is hilarious! Love it! I have quite a long lis of "Dont's", as well! :)
ReplyDelete...and this is how we learn! haha!
ReplyDeleteloved this post! I think we should all be required to write one just like this! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe baton is a good idea, especially if it's actually one of those GIANT swirly lollipops.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I can learn some of those lessons through YOU!!! and not have to live them myself. Been there, done that with the non-stretching thing, though. Lesson WELL LEARNED!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeletehaha
ReplyDeleteI was NOT going to kiss any desperate wellesly girls, but I did move in for a high-5, and to my surprise they backed away from the fence. hah. Next time I might try your trick :)
OMG, so funny!! That picture of the hobbled foot creeps me out, though, ick! Glad you've figured all these things out so we don't have to!
ReplyDeleteToo funny. Thanks for the giggle.
ReplyDeleteokay, so i almost didn't make it past the creepy tiny feet in the creepy tiny shoes--BAH!!! thanks for sharing your (hilarious, if you don't mind me saying) mistakes. you've spared us all the same fate!
ReplyDeleteWe've all got our moments like that! Love the bound foot example...
ReplyDeletelove the shoes.
ReplyDeletebtw - I was a smart baby....it was the growing up that got me stupid.
hahaha thanks for the chuckle...
ReplyDeleteGreat post! We've all had our moments.
ReplyDeletethat is hilarious!!!!
ReplyDeletehow's the barn building coming along?!!!
sing with me:
" And days go by...
I can feel 'em flyin'
Like a hand out the window in the wind" !!!
Thank you so much for your comment on my blog because I was able to find your blog. I must admit to spending over an hour reading about all of your marathon experiences. You are incredibly inspiring and I am so excited to follow your progress.
ReplyDeleteSo funny! Thanks for following :) I'm following you too! And I just took a look at your race schedule...a race every month except August...you are craaazy but I like it!
ReplyDeleteI would call you an experimental runner. You try something new, it doesn't work, you don't do it again. Yep, in hindsight it may have been dumb but who has 20/20 foresight?
ReplyDeleteLive and learn. You are doing well.
ReplyDeleteThat was really funny! Thanks for making me laugh! Hey we all make mistakes and we figure them out along the way. Thats what is so great about being an athlete! Good luck to you!
ReplyDeleteI love this post! Sometimes you can only learn by experiencing...
ReplyDeleteYou're new theme song is "you're so vain" by Carlie Simon! HAHAHAHA!! Ok, best line of the month by a blogger...yes you.. "even babies know they should stretch...and they're stupid". I'm gonna be laughing all afternoon thinking about stupid babies! Sounds like a line that should have been in the Hangover.
ReplyDeleteNew to your blog Jim, but really LOVE what you have to say.
ReplyDeleteNo one can say you haven't tried new things and explored options as far as running goes : )
The small shoe thing is pretty out of this world, I can't even imagine how your feet must have felt!
Love the new header but bring back the background pics....those were awesome.
ReplyDeleteI want to hear your comments about peeing on the run in my Golden Warrior post today.
Lastly, the high knees and baton are one thing but to make sure you have proper running form get the hat too. That will help keep your head steady.
The kissing story is hilarious.
ReplyDeleteYou are pure running awesomeness, no matter the faux pas. Live and learn, which is what you are doing =)
It's amazing how different you look as you do each 'dumb' thing. I'd never recognize you.
ReplyDeleteAt least you've figured out where you might have gone wrong...
ReplyDeleteHahahah. This was awesome. My actual shoes. :)
ReplyDeleteDogs and cats know they need to stretch, too, and they always look like they're enjoying it. I agree w/ Char...you're an experimentalist, not a fool. And I'd like to point out that you've now run fast enough for Boston TWICE, not once. :^)
ReplyDeleteThis is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. We're all works in progress!
