In marathons ... heck, even 5K's, I am a notoriously slow starter. Typically I start my first 4-5 miles a minute slower per mile than what I finish. I guess you could say I like to eeaazzzzzee into it! I usually run the first half of races about 20 seconds slower than my overall finishing pace, and the second half about 20 seconds faster. I know a lot of runners take this approach, but I kinda take it to extremes.
Capping off a negative-split second half at the 2011 Boston Marathon |
This whole negative split thing was very much by design. I didn't just wake up one morning and think, "Hey, why don't I run the first half of my marathon really slow ... and then kill myself the second half!" Rather, it was to prevent hitting the wall. In early marathons, I hadn't quite figured out how to run them yet. And as a result, I started REALLY fast, and then usually hit the wall and dropped way off around mile 22 or 23, sometimes earlier. If you've done this, you know it can ruin not only your goal time, but also the whole marathon experience. Walking/running those final 4-5 miles to the tune of a 5 minutes slower per mile is a grind. So I literally tried flipping that scenario around. Starting slower has allowed me to finish stronger and enjoy the experience much more. And I usually finish right around my projected overall pace, but I always look back after and wonder ... "What if I ran the whole race closer to my second half split pace?"
The Extreme Home Makeover Bus with a police escort through Wichita |
So my hat's really off to runners who can maintain the same speedy pace for an entire marathon. I can't do it! But hopefully by changing up my training a little toward the end of the year, it will be like the Extreme Home Makeover Bus I saw in Wichita, KS this summer, except it will be an Extreme Running Makeover! And by decreasing my times earlier in the run, I'll be dropping the frog directly into the boiling water ... I'll let you know if he cooks! Have a great day!
... be great today!
Wowsers...your back to backs are coming right up! I have only run one full and did the total opposite - faster and the start and wanting to chop my legs off by the last 6 miles. I definitely want to try a different approach and think that this will totally work for me! Good luck!
ReplyDeleterunningforfitness.org has a great neg. split race pace calc that I use all of the time, I love it!

Very interesting info. Thanks for the brain food.
ReplyDeleteLove the analogy. The way you run marathons is SMART!! 2/3 of my marathons have ended with the death shuffle and it is so not worth it. Good luck with your extreme running makeover. ha ha I think you just have too much time on your hands to think during this taper!
ReplyDeleteLove this analogy. I am just like you...a negative splitter. Don't do it and I blow it. And I've also tried to remedy it a bit b/c i feel like I should be able to push the pedal a bit more, even from the start. I'll be anxious to see how it goes for you.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I used your picture that you sent today on my post!
ReplyDeleteI always go out way too fast...for my Sunday race I have to go out slow..or my coach will kill me...
ReplyDeleteI have my first race this sunday and I am just going to keep telling myself to go SLOW for the first mile. you are pretty hardcore. it's nice to see what I MAY be able to be like in a few....or many years :D good luck at your races.
ReplyDeleteI'm faster at the end if I start off slow. Although, some might say that I start off slow and end slow.
ReplyDeleteNeg split without trying - Nice.
ReplyDeleteI would like to do this someday.
Funny that you are trying to make your beginning miles faster, while I'm trying to perfect your negative split approach! I wish you luck! Maybe someday I'll be wanting what you want...but right now I just want the pacing talent you already have!
ReplyDeleteI once saw a shirt that said "race plan: start off slow & then back off a bit".... That's this turtles motto! Good luck this weekend! I know you will rock it!
ReplyDeleteMy best races have been the ones where I've started off slow and negative splitted. When I go out too hard I just die so I think there's something to be said for your strategy.
ReplyDeleteKill it this weekend, Jim!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
ReplyDeleteBTW I'm so disturbed about the frog story that's really all I could focus on =( Ribbit
At first I didn't know what your post was about so I didn't click on it, haha
ReplyDeleteI do love your approach of negative splitting races. In the end over a marathon this approach probably works best - because then your form and pace doesn't break down near the end - keeping your running efficiently the whole race. I'm curious as to how your new approach goes in a stand alone marathon - don't try it this weekend! haha Good luck on the back to back marathons!
I've only done 2 half marathons (both negative split), and 1 marathon (slower on 2nd half). So next one I do I'm definitely going to try to start slower at first.
And yea, I guess being injured me that no one really cares how fast you do a race. Why would they? My feeling is that as long as you gave your best out there (or whatever you wanted to do), that is all you can do. So keep posting your race results, I like reading them!
I saw this article today and thought of you, they even mention Lee's Summit high school in the article. ESPN outside the lines special airs Saturday at 10 AM it sounds like.
