Southern Marathon = FREEEEZING!!!

Frozen "Jim Halpert Face" (Wow, kinda wrinkly!)
Last year I ran the Mississippi Blues Marathon in Jackson, Mississippi.  "Warm State" right?  It was 17 degrees with a relaxing 15mph breeze during the race.  "Feels like" temp of 8 degrees for the entire balmy run!

Saturday I'll be running in Huntsville, Alabama at the Rocket City Marathon.  The forecast is for 28 degrees with a 15mph North headwind from miles 15-26.  That will feel super toasty!  Well, at least I can just put in my earbuds, turn up the music, and tough it out for those last 11 miles.  Oh wait - I'LL BE DISQUALIFIED IF I USE HEADPHONES!!! (way to go Rocket City, you really taught us iPod runners a lesson! So stupid.)

Normally by this point I'm rip-roarin' & ready to go for a marathon.  I can't tell you how much I'm dreading this one.  Don't get me wrong ... I'm always thankful and count it as a blessing to be able to run and spend time doing something I love ... but this baby's gonna hurt!  I look forward to reporting a nice 5-6 hour time to you on Monday.  Have a nice warm weekend!
... be great today!

  1. Wow. Good luck on Saturday. I'm sure you'll do great!

What you need are some wireless headsets. Since its gonna be cold you can hide them under your hat ;)

  3. well, I'm jealous.....I'll take 28 over 70 degrees anytime. (when the weather report turned warm last wk, I emailed Huntsville to ask about any cancellations - had they allowed it, I would have been heading to Huntsville too - boo)

Huntsville is a GREAT, FAST course so get ready to run FAST. with it being so cold, I think you can easily hide your earbud in your ear wrap. :) (last year I did see a couple of Ipods out on the course. can't say whether they were DQ'ed or not) (had I not been running for a BQ time last year, I would have worn mine - I missed the BQ, so I totally should have worn them....... :)

    Good Luck and safe travels!

  4. If marathons were easy and pain free I suppose we wouldn't run them. All the best!

  5. Have a great one!

  7. That's gonna be a chilly race. Hopefully once you're running it won't feel all that cold.

And the no-headphone thing is super lame. Just don't get that one. I think Sony has some wireless headphones... if you want to live dangerously :) Just curious, do they have people on the course who are writing down bib numbers of the lawbreakers who dare wear headphones? And do they not give them medals? Ugh.

Anyway, good luck! Smash that race!

  8. Have a good race! I have heard lots of good reviews about that marathon so hope you have a godo experience.

I don't get the no headphones thing although I am sure there must be a reason but... seems like even in the strict races you always see a renegade or two listening to their ipod. I have done a few marathons now without headphones and it really isn't all that bad. It gives you time to contemplate on how much your legs are hurting :) Kidding... Have a great race!

  9. I just got cold thinking about it! Good luck and stay warm.

I think you should sneak in your ears buds. Wear a hat down over your ears and run them up your back. No one will see that you have them in! :-)

  11. Good luck!! You will do great (as always). I've said it before, but - if we're paying all that money to run a marathon - they should allow headphones. Seems silly to me not to.

  12. Somebody needs an attitude change. If you go into the race with this type of attitude you will hate it. So I suggest you put on your big girl panties and go out there and make the best of it.

    Best of luck!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Ouch on the weather, have a good run! And yea, you will be getting somewhere around 3:29, don't worry about it, haha

Is Missouri going crazy right now? What is up with Pujols going to the Angels? Doesn't that guy have enough money? If he stayed in St. Louis, he would be a God. If he isn't already a god to the fans there. With the Angels signing Pujols and Wilson, the A's will for sure be behind them in the standings for a long time, ugh

  16. I'm sure you'll be within about 5 to 10 minutes of you PR if not faster. Good luck to you. I guess I should tell you this race will be no sweat.

  17. Nothing could be as miserable as it was for the Disney Goofy in 2010. At the start of the half marathon on Saturday it was 24 degrees and sleeting/snowing. Then when it "warmed up" it just drizzled for 2 hours. The Marathon on Sunday Was freezing once again - but no snow or rain.

If it is below freezing - be very careful at water stops. With all the water on the ground - it freezes and becomes an ice skating rink.

Good luck - bring handwarmers - it really helps.

  21. Can't wait for the race report, Jim! Was it actually that cold? Did your hair freeze? How many states is that now? When Colorado?

  22. The cold is OK... that headwind is certainly NOT! Hope it went well.

  23. I'm not sure you could run a marathon in 5—6 hours if you tried. Good luck!

  24. Can you find a buddy that has the same pace as you to sing the same song....over and over and over again? That should give you some warm fuzzies.

  25. Duh. something hit me and I realized that this was posted before the weekend, so you already raced. Then I had the joy of reading through your comments. Now, at the risk of looking like an overzealous stalker, I hope you HAD a great race.
