Breaking Down A Free Race Photo

If you've followed mine and my wife's blogs for a while (Michael's is of course called Slowly Tri-ing), you know we are a couple of picture hams.  Is it because we're self-consumed and narcissistic ... a little.   But when it comes to race photos, you can glean a world of information about where you are in your running process.

One of the really good race organizations we have in Kansas City is KC Running Company.  They do a really nice job of managing races, with good communication and quick publishing of race results on their website.  But probably the coolest things they provide for most races are free race photos!  They usually have a couple of people posted up at the finish line and somewhere else during the race, as well as a couple of folks walking around taking candids.  Then usually that same day, they dump them to the website ordered by finishing time.  It takes a little hunting to find your photos, but it's just a wonderful perk of their races.  You can print them in various sizes and the resolution is fantastic.  It's great!

Above is a picture from our 5K on Saturday.  Besides my typical initial shock when I see my weathered, aging, wrinkled, face and growing forehead in a photo of, "Wow ... my poor wife!!!" ... I was actually fairly pleased with my running form considering I was moving pretty quickly, and I was fairly winded at this point.  My stride and posture has really improved from where I started.

Anyway, just thought you'd get a chuckle from some of my thoughts when I look at a race photo.  Hope your week and running are going well!
... be great today!

  1. Where's the man who told his wife how lucky she was to have him? Wasn't that just a couple of weeks ago?? The ego can be such a fragile thing.

  2. I don't know how you added all the captions to the photo but that is cool. Around here all of a sudden free race photos are happening a lot. Love it!

  3. Only you to analyse a photo like that :) Although I think secretly we all look for certain things in our race photos.

  6. My race photo analysis usually breaks down into two basic categories: "hey, that's actually a decent picture!" or "ugh!" Good pictures typically get no further analysis lest the initial favorable impression be dispelled, and bad pictures are subsequently ignored. My one marathon had camera club people stationed at various places along the course and offered free pictures, which was pretty awesome.

  7. Ugh. Don't get me started. I still refuse to post the bad pictures. Too many of them to remind me of me getting old! Life is good though, so no complaints. You look good for an old man ;-)
