Tale Of Two Long Runs

Big Fat Failure ...
I woke up yesterday at 4:30am to get ready for my 22 miler, but I noticed right away that I "just wasn't feelin' it"!  I can usually tell within about 15 minutes of waking up what kind of run it was going to be.  My legs were heavy.  My gut felt fat & out of shape.   I felt really sluggish, and all I wanted to do was crawl back into bed.  But I soldiered on!  I got ready and started my run.

After about 12 steps, I though, "Man, this is gonna be tough!"  It was about 70 degrees with 75% humidity - plus there were some nasty storms moving in.  I made it Casey's General Store and made a left, then headed South, about 1.5 miles into my run.  I looked down and noticed that my shorts around my crotch and the whole chest of my shirt were soaked!  I had only been running for about 13 minutes.  But I kept going.  My legs felt heavier and heavier and I was insanely hungry for some reason.  I pushed it until about 3.5 and finally told myself, "This ain't gonna happen today!"  And I that point, I turned around and went home, deciding I would run tomorrow.

When I got home, I got something to eat and took a 2-1/2 hour nap.   I woke up for a while and then Michael got home from her awesome 42 mile bike ride.  At that point, I took another 2-1/2 hour nap.(That's a total 5 nap hours for those scoring at home)  The two naps really told me that my body just needed the rest and that I've probably been pushing it a little too hard lately.  But I HATE quitting in the middle of a run and the day felt like a huge failure!

Huge Manly Success ...
I woke up this morning at 4:30am to get ready for my 22 miler.  I wasn't messin' around today.  I knew it was going to be hotter than yesterday, but you would have to saw one of my legs off to make me quit on this run.  At 5am it was literally 74 degrees with 98% HUMIDITY!!! NINETY FREAKING EIGHT PERCENT!!!  When I finished about 3 hours later, it was about 80 degrees, but the humidity has plummeted to 90% ... which "really cooled things off"!  I literally saw a frozen hot dog driving down the street when I first started my run.  At mile 21 he was perfectly cooked!
This guy was frozen when I started running this morning, but was cooked to well done at mile 21!
I didn't really push it too hard during the run.  Due to the friggin' Congo-like humidity, the goal was simply to finish.  I literally lost about 7 pounds of fluid during the run.  I started at 180 and finished at 173, not kidding.  I stopped after 21 miles, averaging 7:59/mile overall.   Plus, I ran "The Jack" at mile 17. ("The Jack", for those of you new to the blog, is my hill training area.  It's a set of hills adjacent to Lake Jacomo that rise about 150ft over 1 mile in one direction, and 125ft over 1/4 mile in the other.)  Anytime I include "The Jack" in a long run, it's a lot tougher.  But overall I felt good about getting back out there today and powering through it! It was a huge confidence booster for the Missoula Marathon in two weeks.
...be great today!

  1. Ack - humidity is THE WORST. Great job listening to your body, and giving it a little rest before tackling that long run.

  2. You rock!! I ran in 80 degree weather (in utah so probably 0 humidity) and I wanted to die!

Running in the heat can only make you stronger. Enjoy the rest of your day!

  5. Great job! I can only imagine running that far in that kind of humidity. That's a lot of water to loose too, but I bet you are super happy with being able to tackle that 22 miler. Always good to get back out there after a bad day.

  7. 7 pounds lost? I hope you had some water or hydration something during your run. Those temps and humidity sound horrible. Way to get it done on Sunday!

  8. I dont remember the last time I took a nap..let me think...yeah no still nothing...it was in another life.

humidity is the enemy. here I have to battle heat...serious heat but at least it is dry.

I have had LR days where I should have just turned around and postpone to the next day...this is why it is a good idea to do the LR on Saturday instead of Sunday!

  9. Seven pounds! That's a lot of drinking that you have to do. You're making me love our cold weather even more.

  11. as I take a week off from running, I'm actually looking forward to battling the heat and humidity on some long runs. I sweat a LOT, my shoes slosh when I run. It's gross! I have to drink every 20 minutes to keep up. I'm looking forward to it!

  15. I can't even imagine that level of humidity, let alone running in it. Way to get it done. And good job resting when you obviously needed it.

  18. If there's one thing I remember about KC in the summertime, it's the humidity. Ugh. Congrats on getting the run in, better late than never.

See if you can get rid of that humidity by the end of July will you please?

  19. I'm with Tahoegirl, crazy!

98% humidity? It should have just been raining! Insane that you lost 7 pounds, make sure to hydrate a ton!

  20. Missoula, wow I'm jealous still. Way to drop 7 in 3 hours! Did you drink it back in Mt. Dew? That's what I do. I do the Dew. Just kidding.

Actually, I'm gonna need some advice soon. Gonna try two or three marathons in a row. I'll need some pointers

  21. After three days in MO this past weekend, my hat's off to you. I did my long run on Friday, before the humidity came back. Yesterday I ran a measly two miles with my husband. It was fun to run with him (we get to do this about once a year), but boy was I glad it was so short!!

  23. So, it was like running in a sauna? Fun stuff - obviously your body needed the rest on Saturday so you could rock an amazing 22 miles on Sunday! Great job!

  24. Wow. I agree that your body clearly needed all that rest.

    Be careful out there!

  25. 5 hours worth of naps? yep...I would say that was the better choice than finishing that run. I'm sure your body thanked you for that decision!

  26. Hoping that marathon will be easy compared to this humid long run!
