Well, that was different! Not my first 100 mile week ever ... that was not a big deal. I'm talking about my first 30 mile run ever. That was hard! To be honest, I don't feel quite as good about it as I thought I would afterwards. The 100 mile week was no problem - I broke it up with double runs throughout the week, so it really wasn't bad at all. I've got about 4 more planned before my fall marathon. But the 30 miler today was really a lot tougher than I thought it would be. You're either laughing at me or rolling your eyes at this point ... I mean who thinks a 30 mile run would be "not too tough"? Me. But it was.
My theory with the bulky mileage is to make my legs stronger and faster. And that's working really well this summer. But the reasoning behind the 30 miler was to start getting my mind over the 26.2 hump I experience in races. I don't want to view 26.2 as anything other than an average Saturday long run ... and then kill the mutha on race day. But really all I found myself doing today was keeping my pace way-way too slow so I didn't crash at the end, and struggling with miles 28-30. It was warm toward the end (not sweltering - only 85 when I was in the last miles), my legs were tired, and I just wanted to be done. That long of a run really "banged me up" a little too. I've got a few sore spots I need to work out this week. I'm not sure that this run had the desired effect. I'm afraid all it did was set me back a little - it's gonna take a couple of days to get right after that one. But, hey ... I proved to myself I could do it! Hope your running's going well - have a great day & GO TEAM USA!!!
... be great today!
