I'll say it again ... not really a fan of the Ultra Marathon training here. Too slow. Too Long. But that being said, I got a couple of good training runs in this weekend. My legs were a little wobbly after the marathon in Arizona last weekend, but I managed to get a solid 23 in on Saturday, and a shaky, but complete 24 on Sunday.
The run on Saturday was something I've never done before ... 3 hours & 38 minutes of running at my gym. Inside. On the track. The experience was a little below average. But we got 10" of snow here in the middle of the week and it was 15 degrees at 8:00am. So to the gym I went. But on Sunday it was a little warmer so I decided to just run loops in my fairly low traffic neighborhood. They'd basically only plowed enough of the roads for two narrow cars to pass, with no shoulder or sidewalks cleared. But pretty much everybody gave me space when they saw me coming.
Sunday's run put me at 523 miles for 2013. Good start to the year. Gonna go rest my legs now. Have a great week!
... be great today!
Nice job Jim. I'm sure you'll rock the Ultra. If you can do that much on the treadmill, you can do anything.
ReplyDeleteI bet that treadmill run was so good for you mentally. I mean, NOTHING can be tougher than that!
ReplyDeleteP.S. You are almost 1.5 times my age.
P.P.S. Sorry.
P.P.P.S. Sort of.
That's dedication - to run indoors for over three and a half hours. How long was the track and did you keep changing direction to keep from going stir-crazy?
ReplyDeleteKiller two days of running! I can't imagine doing that many miles in the weekend. Great job!
ReplyDeleteNice job, I am at 518:)
ReplyDeleteThe miles definitely add up quickly with Ultra training. Have to admit I don't miss that training plan. That's a heck of a weekend, especially with the indoor effort. Did 18 miles on a small track on a cruise ship a couple years back and was ready to jump overboard by the end. Good work sir.
ReplyDeleteDedication, it's what makes you great....said the spatula.
ReplyDeleteWell if anything you should be mentally stronger. Wow that all sounds completely terrible!
ReplyDeleteHow many laps for a mile was the track? My IT bands would fall off if I attempted that!
wow, that is impressive. A ton of time required to do all that too. Props for running outside in the snow and for 4 hours in the gym!
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes! I agree with the other commenters about your mental toughness. I couldn't even do 30 minutes on an indoor track.
ReplyDeleteIf I haven't said this before, thanks for saying "be great today". That really is motivating man. Other than that, I hear ya on the ultra running thing. I like long distance, but not LONG distance. I like driving for 2-3 hours, not 10. lol. Take care and awesomeness on the 500+.
ReplyDeleteGood for you running that long on an indoor track. I did that once training for my last marathon. My weekend was packed and the only time I could possibly do my last long run was Friday morning...and it was thunderstorming. So, I headed off to the indoor track at 6:00 AM and ran the 1/10 mile loop for 3 hours, 30 minutes.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't as bad as I thought and I felt really fast as I continually breezed past the retired walking club.
After I was on the track for two hours, the retired folks began to realize just how long I'd been running and they started cheering for me. During my final laps, a half-dozen elderly folks were sitting on a bench along side the indoor track and were cheering and clapping for me every time I ran by.
It was a fun experience.
If you can run 3 hours & 38 minutes inside, you can run an ultra!
ReplyDeleteWhat's up, I check your blogs regularly. Your humoristic style is awesome, keep doing what you're doing!
