Sioux Falls Punched Me In The Mouth

Shouldn't have called my shot about PR'ing in this marathon.  Sioux Falls took it personally and kicked my rear! 61 degrees & 89% humidity at the start of the race ... 79 degrees at the end of the race.  Also more hills than I thought there would be.  But that is NO EXCUSE!!!  I just wasn't good enough today.  I'll have a full race recap soon,  but needless to say ...

PR did not happen.
PR DID NOT happen.
PR DID NOT HAPPEN.

3:21:15 ... 7:41/mile

... be great today!

  1. You finished right? That's all that matters! A good "punch in the mouth" only makes you stronger!

  2. We learn far more from our disappointments than our easy victories. Failing to adjust one's goal pace to accommodate the marathon's conditions (temperature, humidity, topography) is a common mistake which we've all made (myself on several occasions). Roll with the punch, and better weather luck next time.

  3. Still a great time. Get over it and move on. Having a bad race sucks but what sucks worse is dwelling on it.

I am still looking forward to the report.

  4. I'm looking forward to the report, too, Jim. You CAN'T do anything about the weather--happened to me in NYC six years ago--I knew it wasn't the climate for my real goal. Adjusting my expectations allowed me to have an awesome time anyway.

You're always great, man! Don't beat yourself up.

  5. That's part of the beauty of running. Just when you think you have the training and the mindset, that 26.2 mile beast reminds you of who is in charge. Nice job putting another one in the books!

  8. That is such horsesh*t to say you weren't good enough.

You were good enough to give what your body could give. Did you quit? Did you walk away after 10 miles knowing you wouldn't PR?

That answer is no so you were obviously good enough. Good enough to tackle 26.2 miles and do it in a time most people only dream of.

You were not only good enough, but you were great.

  9. Looking to your more detailed report. I agree that humidity kills; regardless - you KNOW that you are good enough - we do.

  10. I still love you and I did let you come home. So it wasn't so bad after all :)

I think you are the BEST runner I know. You are awesome and amazing! And you still had a GREAT race and a GREAT time!

  11. It's ok--you'll have another shot. And really, your bad day is pretty much everyone else's dream day! Rest up and recover well!

  12. Coming within 45 seconds of your PR on a humid day is no failure at all. Given better conditions, there is no doubt you would have broken your PR!

  13. Jim is human. I've heard that kryptonite is buried somewhere around mile 12.
