"Great humblebrag bro!"

Okay, sometimes I'm kind of a bragger.  I admit it.  It's never to show someone up, or separate myself in some sort of contrived fitness level competition.  But simply because I'm getting old - I'm friggin' 43!  And anytime I can share a running achievement that's a big deal to me ... I share it!  Ya'll know that about me!

A couple of weeks ago after detailing a recent personal victory, a blogger left a comment, "Great humblebrag bro!"  I thought it was pretty funny.  But it got me thinking - I really don't want anyone to think that I post workouts to get a slap on the back or an, "Atta boy Jim!"  The reason I started this blog was to share ideas, training methods, and running experiences - and more importantly to learn from others.  I love reading about your workouts and getting different ideas from runners who are much more experienced, faster, or better conditioned than me.

So with that in mind, here is what I did last week.  It was a pretty decent week of training for me, but nothing to brag about.  And maybe it will give someone a little inspiration, something to shoot for, or laugh at because you're way more advanced than me!
Pretty foggy and humid on Wednesday in Lee's Summit - about 65 degrees w/90% humidity
Sunday ... 30 min core training in the morning.  Then 12 mile run on the Rock The Parkway Half Marathon Course.  Ran it at a 7:19/pace overall - but ran the first 3 miles pretty slow.  The last 9 were all under 7:00/mile.  I felt pretty good considering I ran 19 miles the day before on Saturday.

Monday ... 30 min core training in the morning & then 1-1/2 hour full body workout at the gym.  No run.

Tuesday ... 30 min core training in the morning.  Then 12 mile run at medium pace 7:40/mile overall.

Wednesday ... No core work.  11 miles total with speed work in the middle.  Ran 6 one mile repeats with 2:30/min rest in between.  Averaged 6:26/mile for the repeats.  A little disappointed with how hard I had to work to keep the pace.  But it was 65 degrees/90% humidity - so the conditions weren't great.  Overall, pretty good workout

Thursday ... 30  min core training in the morning.  Then 9 mile recovery run in Omaha, NE.  Averaged nice smooth 8:30/mile pace after speed work the day before.  Legs felt great!

Friday ... Absolutely nothing.

Saturday ... No core work.  Ran 22 miles with several tough hills.  Averaged 8:00/mile and never really felt like I was pushing too hard, even with all the hills.  About 1,200 feet of elevation incline during the run. (then ran 6 mile recovery run on Sunday)

Overall I ran 66 miles last week, even with two days off - so not bad mileage-wise.  The times were sufficient for where I'm at right now - but next week I'll start really pushing the speed for the upcoming half-marathon in two weeks where I want to PR.  Hopefully your running is going well - have a great week!
... be great today!

  1. All I can say is that I read your blogs for the same reasons: " I love reading about your workouts and getting different ideas from runners who are much more experienced, faster, or better conditioned than me"

  2. I've had the same feeling and I'm as slow as they come. I just enjoy reading your blog and never though about it that way. Good week of training!

  3. You're clearly doing something right, so I read in hopes of stealing some of your insight since we're in the same demographic. Doesn't seem like bragging to me - just sharing your successes.

Feeling pretty old since I had to do a search on 'humblebrag' to get some more info. Not to hard to figure out the concept, but didn't know it was a 'thing' on Twitter.

  4. Did you know the letter K is worth 5 points, but if you play it on a TW spot that it's worth 15? Also, there is no letter that you can put next to "c".

  6. I never looked at it as bragging. It's just sharing the facts. I've been putting up a lot of my runs too and there's no bragging involved there - isn't that just what we runner/bloggers do?!

  9. Anyone who runs in that kind of humidity is inspiring and deserves to tell it like it is! I'm looking forward to reading about your race.
