After my last post about strengthening my hips for running, a few of you asked what kind of hip exercises I typically do. And for a while, I'd been kicking around the idea of making a video for my blog. So here it is ... my first Vlog, or Vblog, or Vidlog, or whatever the cool kids call it. It's a quick video demonstrating the typical workout I use to strengthen the hips area including, hip flexors, adductors, upper and lower glutes, hamstrings, and quads.
Michael laughed at it. And I say "aaaa" and "ummm" a little too much. Plus, if you don't like the song "Like I Roll" by Black Stone Cherry, well sorry - you should. I use it illegally in this video so I'm sure YouTube will be shutting it down soon. Anyway, this is what I look and sound like ... big treat I know (sarcasm).
Some of my form is not great, but hopefully it will give you an idea of what I use to keep my hip area strong and healthy. I usually do an ab and lite core workout Monday-Friday, and then use this as a supplemental workout about once-twice per week. My favorites and probably the most effective exercises for me out of all the ones shown in the video are the Speed Skaters, and all of the band and cable work. Hopefully some of these will work for you too! If you have questions, certainly let me know ... and enjoy!!!
... be great today!
These are great. I love the prawning exercise. I do many of these, but not all - now I have new ones to add, or rotate in. I like that you said 2-3 times per week for ~45minutes. Great advice. This was great!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Thank you! I don't have the cables, but I can do the rest of the routine. Thank you for posting.
ReplyDeleteJim: Excellent Video! I have never seen a few of these (hamstring push-up for example) and will definitely be incorporating them into my routine! These are great because they only require inexpensive equipment and can be done at home.
ReplyDeleteThanks for making this!
Well done and excellent presentation. I have seen most of these and have lost them to memory - glad you did this for us. I will be adding the "old" ones and the new ones you demonstrated.
ReplyDeleteQuestion -- the 'blue' leg band -- never seen one before. Where would I find one to purchase?
Thanks C2Iowa
C2 - thanks! My wife got that blue band in a physical therapy session she had a couple of years ago. I've looked for them at Scheel's and Dick's and never found them. If you Google "physical therapy resistance bands", you'll find that they're sold at medical and PT supply type websites. But I've never bought one - that one just kinda showed up in our home - ha.
ReplyDeleteGreat video. I like the variety of exercises and will be using some to change up my routine.
ReplyDeleteAnd I liked the song.
Thanks Jim. That is a score in a round about way; had to go to therapy to get one. haha
ReplyDeleteOh man....I SO need to get back to my hip exercises; I've been super slacking (my foot's letting me know it's time!). Thanks, Jim!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good video, Jim. Did you take a video editing class? It looks like you know what you are doing. I don't think Youtube will shut you down. They like traffic :)
ReplyDeleteThe exercises are great! I've seen a few from myrtl, but there were some in there I haven't seen before. No doubt that a regular routine of this would keep a person's hip girdle/glutes strong and help their running. Great share!
Thanks Raina, I've had a little practice. But I'd much rather be behind the camera than in front of it - ha.
ReplyDeleteIts a great video! A lot of those exercises are the same ones that I was given to do by my Physical Therapist when I had knee pain. Stong hips dont lie!
ReplyDeleteFabulous video and I hope you re-edit / re-post it if youtube do pull it. Tonnes of great exercises there, good stuff :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me to do this! Hips are definitely a weakness I need to work on.
ReplyDeleteAh should have read this post first
ReplyDeleteThat's what happens when one goes on vacation and gets behind mandatory blog reading....
:)
Very interesting video! I think this workout is perfect for us. We can increase hip joint strength easily through this workout.back and neck pain bergen county , low back pain bergen county
ReplyDeleteHip problems can lead the patients to many other problems like back pain, knee pain etc. it is so important that patients should adopt some workouts for the power, strength of hip joints and muscles.
