Just Like Telemundo!

Man, I wish I spoke Spanish.  The actors on the Spanish Channel soap operas seem so PASSIONATE about what they are talking about.  Like every word is life changing!  What are they saying?  Something about a dog, an eye-patch, and a folding chair ... I think?  But how would I know?  The only thing I can communicate in Spanish is a "Table for two, please.", and "Where's the bathroom?".  And I've never once heard those phrases on these channels.

But when we talk about running, it must sound like we are speaking Spanish, Greek, ... or Martian - based on the reactions we get anyway.  I usually try not to bring it up for that reason.  But when asked about it, my explanation usually brings a blank stare, like I'm talking about the aliens visiting and removing my Spleen for test purposes.

That's why I love coming here.  Everyone here understands what it takes to sacrifice sleep for footsteps on the pavement before the rooster crows.  What is means to pen another entry in our mileage journal.  The pure high and fulfilment we experience in not only the finish line, but also the journey.

I am so encouraged when I read all of the great running blogs.  Sometimes when it's just me, the street-lights, and a frozen cloud of breath trailing me - I can begin to think ... "I've gotta be the only idiot in this whole city doing this right now!"  But then after cruising through a couple of blog pages, I'm soon reminded that a lot of other people have the same goals and aspirations of something better than where they are today.  We chase the ultimate run.  We pursue the purest of daily nutrition.  And we all dream of perfect health as a life-style, not just a goal-driven short term challenge.

Be encouraged that at least one person draws inspiration from your words.  Regardless of time or pace.  Regardless of distance or miles.  We all speak the same language here.
Be Great Today!

  1. I said "Do you speak-a my language?". He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich.

"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement." - Steve Prefontaine

  2. I agree other non-runners just do not get it. I also think I'm the only idiot out there - and sometimes I am. It would be nice to see lots of people running at 5am but it isn't going to happen so good thing for blog land!

  3. I can say "Dos Cervezas" and that has always been helpful. It's handy to know how to order beer in any language.

As for the jargon, any hobby has it, so I say non-runners just "deal with it" :)

  4. It's like most things, you sample the waters a bit with others before diving it. If you say a little something about running and don't get that glazed over look then proceed with caution. Sometimes you can actually reach someone. Okay not often but it does happen.

To my family sad to say, I'm speaking Greek.
