2011 Recap: Part 3
I ran several non-marathon races this year, but only targeted four of them for PR's or "going all out". The rest I ran with family, friends, or just for fun. In every one of these races where I "raced", I was fortunate enough (or lucky enough) to win my age group! Child please ... that's four first place medals for the old guy ... even if it was luck!!!
Now, were these huge races ... no! Were there really, really fast people in my age group ... apparently not! And were these merely first place medals in the "old-man" division, and not over all ... yes! But this is all beside the point! It was still a great year of shorter races for me, and one that I am proud of.
I've learned not to make races about competing with other people, but rather just competing with myself. Unless you're world class or something, what's really the point of targeting someone to beat in a race. There's most likely always gonna be someone faster than you out there! And like Michael always tells me "You can't control who's at the race, you can only run your best!" She also always says, "Zebras is just a horse with stripes!" But that's a whole different thing I won't get into right now.
All Non-Marathon Races ... 1st Place 40-44 AG
6/4 ... Kansas City Hospital Hill 10K - Kansas City, Missouri ... 45:32, 7:19/pace (1st Place 40-44AG, 26th/1,406 Overall)
6/10 ... Lees Summit Night Flight 5K - Lees Summit, Missouri ... 20:06, 6:29/pace (1st Place 40-44AG, 13th/830 Overall)
8/28 ... Kansas City Royals 5K - Kansas City, Missouri ... 19:09, 6:11/pace (1st Place 40-44AG, 13th/1,479 Overall)
9/24 ... Cerner 15K ... Kansas City, Kansas ... 1:04:14, 6:54/pace (1st Place 40-44AG, 36th/975 Overall)
I felt like I ran pretty well in most of them except for the 10K at Hospital Hill. That's the first time I've ever ran a 10K and it's not a great "PR Time". Hopefully I can whittle a little off of that next year. Best wishes in 2012 and happy running!!!
... be great today!

Cerner Kansas City 15K Race Report
Michael & me at the Inaugural Cerner Kansas City 15K
Kansas City, Kansas
September 24, 2011
Time: 1:04:14, 6:54/mile
Finish: 36th out of 975
Place: 1st Place - Male 40-44
- Felt strong & healthy after marathon 13 days before
- Mile 9 of this race was 65th training mile this week
- First 15K race ... so Yee-Ha ... new PR!!!
- Very encouraging 4th Age Group win of the year
- Got to run the race with Michael ... AWESOME!!!
- Michael had her best running day ever ... which was way better than anything I was lucky enough to do!!!
- Double cheeseburger, fries, & Dr. Pepper for pre-race meal??? Yes please!!!
- Race finished in LiveStrong Sporting Park - home of the MLS Sporting Kansas City Soccer Club
What an unbelievable Saturday morning in Kansas City!!! Michael and I ran the first ever Cerner Kansas City 15K, and it could not have been more beautiful ... 52 degrees, sunny, no wind ... perfect!!!
The race was held near the Legends Shopping Center in Kansas City, Kansas, which is adjacent to NASCAR's Kansas Speedway & also LiveStrong Sporting Park, the home of Major League Soccer's Sporting Kansas City - KC's pro soccer club. The race also finished on the floor of the stadium which was really cool. I'm not a big soccer fan, but this stadium, which is only about a year old, is unbelievable ... so beautiful!!!
It was also the first time either of us had ran a 15K race (9.35 miles), which was sponsored by Cerner, a Kansas City based international health care information technology corporation. It seemed like the perfect race for both of us since I typically run about 10-12 miles per day with the exception of long runs on the weekend, and Michael was about at the 9-10 mile point in her marathon training.

Michael & me ... yes I wore my Boston tech-tee as a warm-up again, I earned it ... sue me!
When we arrived at the LiveStrong Sporting Park, my stomach was already churning a little. It "might" have been all the crap I ate the night before, but I can't be 100% certain about that. After visiting the outdoor potties, I was ready to go! I noticed from walking around that my ankle was beginning to loosen up quite bit, but I still had every intention of slowing it down a little today. There was no need to run this race like a fool and mess something up for a few weeks down the road.
It was perfect running weather, and when the race started, my legs actually felt better than anticipated, with a little bounce and not quite as dead as they were at home. During the first few miles, I really held myself back quite a bit, trying not to get too wrapped in race adrenaline ... but it was tough. Every few steps, people were flying by me on both sides. This race was a little hilly - but not a killer ... just a lot of long gradual rolling hills that took a little focus. Throughout the race, I felt smooth and fluent and never really had any pain except for my right hip ... which came out of nowhere??? That went away though. Thankfully my right ankle, which was a nuisance earlier in the week, was not an issue at all.

2011 Cerner Kansas City 15K Elevation ... Total Elevation Gain 450'
Jack really wanted to run with us
The only time I really pushed it a little was during the last 1.35 miles. I ran mile 9 at about 6:20, and the last .35 mile at 5:58 ... but really felt fine at that pace. The only problem was my stomach was really churning from my genius sabotage plan the night before with the burger and fries.
As I crossed the finish line I was very satisfied with my run. I hadn't killed myself. I had held back a little. And I didn't feel like I had over-stressed anything at all! All in all it was a success, but I knew there was no way I placed in my age group based on my effort, which was fine!
Finisher Glass & the awesome Age Group Medal
After getting a really cool pint glass for completing the race, I rounded up some water, an orange, and a bagel and waited for Michael to cross the finish line. I also stopped by the results table to find out if my Garmin matched their results. When I got the results, sure enough, they both said 1:04:14 ... but the printed out sheet they gave me also indicated I was third in the 40-44 Age Group ... I was friggin' thrilled!!! I had actually placed!!!
After Michael finished, we waited around for the Awards Ceremony to get my "bronze medal". The race official announced the third place winner ... it wasn't me. "That's odd", I thought. He then announced the second place finisher ... it wasn't me. In fact, it was the 40 year old I had passed at mile 8.5. Michael then looked at me and said, "That means you won!!!" And sure enough ... the race guy then said, "First Place ... from Lees Summit, Missouri ... Jim Weatherly!!!" I was shocked ... but it was awesome!!! Turns out the results table was wrong and I had actually won my age group. It was an awesome surprise!
Now, I'm not naive enough to think I'm a super-fast runner or anything - I just I was lucky that there weren't a lot of super-fast people in my age group. But it was pretty cool getting first place, even it was pretty lucky. And out of the other races this year that I have been fortunate enough to win my age group - I think this one was the most satisfying. I had stayed withing myself and ran my game plan, and for some strange reason was fast enough on Saturday.
Michael's Day
I was a surprised dork on stage (I wasn't snubbing her)
I was so unbelievably proud of her ... and her day overshadowed anything success I was fortunate enough to experience. She ran like a champion and set not one ... not two ... but three PR's in the same race! Amazing!!!
After I finished I sat in the stands waiting for her with an approximate time of when I thought she would finish. I was just chillin' when all of the sudden, here comes Michael into the stadium ... ABOUT 10 MINUTES SOONER THAN I EXPECTED HER!!!
I quickly fumbled for my camera and I got a really grainy picture of her crossing the finish line, but it wasn't great since it was from my iPhone from a long ways away ... but you can definitely tell it's her. After the race I couldn't stop telling her how proud I was of her. She of course asked how I did and I told her, okay ... but I couldn't contain my excitement for her. She has worked so hard and fought through some injuries to do what she did today ... and it was really her day!!! I couldn't be prouder!!!
Michael with her finishers glass ... and a huge smile!!!
These past few years, I've been very blessed to experience some great fun, and a little success along the way with running. It has brought me a lot of joy and became a huge part of my life. And it's taken my family and I all over the country just doing what we love. But from start to finish, few days compare to this one. It was amazing! Watching Michael cross the finish line as fast as she did was so awesome. She was literally beaming, and had a smile and bounce in her step I could see all the way from seat in the stands.
It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen, but when she crossed the finish line, she threw her hands in the air, and just kept running for about 50 more yards ... like she had energy to burn. SHE DIDN'T STOP!!! Everyone else was bent over tugging their shorts or walking slowly with their hands on their hips ... but this girl still had a bounce in her step!!! Just smiling, laughing, and enjoying her greatest running moment ever!
We spent the rest of the day just enjoying our time together and shared little details about our race with each other. Frankly, I couldn't care less if we talked about my race at all ... I was just happy to hear all about hers.
As we drove home from the race, we were both a little tired. I was obviously very thrilled with the race I had run ... but more importantly, it was one more day of doing what I enjoy with the love of my life ... and that's tough to beat! She had worked so hard and was so proud. And it was so amazing to see the rewards of her training ... and she earned her 3 PR's on Saturday! I'm so proud of you baby! It's funny, I hadn't really gone into Saturday thinking this would be such a wonderful day, but it will be one we both will remember forever. The weather was perfect! I was with my beautiful wife! And we were fortunate enough to spend some time together doing what we love. Today was a great day! Hope yours was too!
... be great today!

Lees Summit Night Flight 5K ... Running After Bedtime
June 10, 2011
Lees Summit, Missouri
1st Place 40-44 Age Group
15th out of 602 Overall
20:06 ... 6:29/mile pace
72 degrees/82% humidity
I'm an EARLY morning runner. So any run after 6AM is getting a little late in the day for me. And a 5K race that starts at 9PM is ... well frankly ... after my bedtime! (My family and friends say I'm 42 going on 63 ... they're probably right, now get off my lawn!)
Friday night I ran in one of my hometown races, the 30th Annual Lees Summit Night Flight 5K. It's a fun after dark race that is sponsored by the Parks & Rec Department. I've ran this race a few times before, but this year I got to run it with my daughter Madison! (Michael was at a play with her friend Cindy) We actually ran individually ... but hey, it was the same event. And we both had a great time, with Madi setting a PR!!! In her first 5K ever, she ran 28:59 for a 9:24/mile pace. AWESOME!!!
Race shirt with "glow-in-the-dark" logo & glow-sticks
I started a little fast trying to keep up with the area Cross Country runners ... too old and too slow for that. I think the winner was about 15 years old and ran 16:30 or something - a little out of my league. But I did keep the flashing lights of the police pace car in sight the whole time! My gut began burning at about 1.5, which was a reminder to this idiot that I need to get back to my ab program and stop eating cheese burgers, fries, and donuts during the week. I'm not kidding about that. But as we approached mile 3 I only saw a couple of "30 something" runners in front of me in the last mile and I knew I had enough in the tank to pass them, which I did.
Madison and Nate
I NEVER feel like I'm going to throw up during a run ... my problem is fighting back the other end. My biggest fear is being one of those pictures on the internet where there was literally "an explosion." I would like to think that I would never "allow" that to happen, but hey? However, I can tell you that last night at the finish line was the closest I've ever come to hurling. I ran about a 4:45/mile pace the last quarter mile and my heart rate got to 197. 195 is what I use as my max! And when I crossed the finish, I was seeing stars and actually thought, "Okay, this is the day I throw up from a run!" But like a champ I held it down!
Madi with the final kick of her 5K PR!!!
I also ran into Lisa from Eat, Pray, Run after the race, but I didn't even think to get a picture (we live in the same town). I wish Michael could have met her - she's a really cool blogger! I've met Lisa a couple of times now at the gym and at this race and she is always very nice. According to her time she ran very well also!
Madi and Nate then waited around while I got my medal for 1st in my Age Group. The medal was pretty ugly, but that's okay. When Michael saw it, she said, "Wow! Did they get from a Cracker Jacks box?" But I really didn't care that much about the medal. It was just awesome to run the race with Madi. And honestly, it was pretty awesome to come in first two weekends in a row. I know when I look back at this period in a few years when I'm a broken down old man, this will probably be the fastest I've ever been. I still want to improve, but PR's are getting harder and harder to come by. I think I'm getting pretty close to my ceiling. But you never know.

After the race when Madi went home, she sent me this text ...
"I'M SOOOOO PROUD OF YOU!!!! Winning first in your age group two weeks in a row!? Are you kidding me! You KILLED it. And I love you! You were great today! :-)"
That was the best thing about the night.
...be great today!

Hospital Hill 10K ... A GREAT Bad Day!
Downtown Kansas City, Missouri
June 4, 2011
Kansas City, Missouri
4/5 Stars
1st Place 40-44 Age Group
26th out of 1,406 Overall
45:32 PR ... 7:19/mile pace
75 degrees/80% humidity
Until this weekend, I had never ran a 10K race. And I had always heard great things about the Kansas City Hospital Hill Run, so since last year I had targeted it for my first race of this distance. As advertised it was a well organized, medium size race featuring a 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon with about 6,600 runners in all events. It started and finished in downtown Kansas City, Missouri in the Crown Center area.
Finisher's Medal
Packet Pickup ... Swag ... Medal ... Crowd Support
Packet pickup was well organized and held in the Crown Center Exhibition Hall. There were a ton of volunteers who were very helpful, although a little uninformed with a couple of logistics questions I had. Bart Yasso from Runner's World was also there visiting with runners.
I am becoming less and less concerned with give-aways, SWAG packets, and post race festivities for races, but I know a lot of people really enjoy them. For this race, runners did pretty well. We got a nice technical t-shirt (black for men, teal for women), a water bottle, a nice finisher medal for all three events, a pair of flip-flops, beer & famous Kansas City BBQ after the race. Plus there was great live music and a ton of things to do around the popular Crown Center shopping area.
Good race bag with beer & BBQ at the end of the race (I had neither)
The medal was pretty cool, especially considering everyone got one regardless of what race they completed. The logo on the technical t-shirt and the medal both read "I Conquered The Hill", which is what the race is known for. "The Hill" is Hospital Hill which is approx a 2 mile square area that is home to various medical facilities, including Truman Medical Center. Plus, while it's not the toughest hill I've ever ran in a race ... it's pretty hard! So their slogan fits I guess. More on that later.
The crowds were decent considering it was only about the 3rd or 4th really hot day we've had in KC this year. In the afternoon the high was about 95 degrees with suffocating humidity. And at the 7AM start time, it was already getting a little toasty - about 75 degrees, with 80% humidity. These weren't bad conditions to watch a race, but running it was a little challenging.

Pre-race "Get-Down, Get-Down!"
Michael and I went through our typical pre-race
I had decided that I would spend quite a bit of time warming-up for this race so I could start strong right out of the chute. The race started at 7AM so I began some light miles at about 20 minutes 'til. I ran a total of about 2 miles prior to the race and really noticed that the even though the 75 degree temps and high humidity were fine to stand around in, they were gonna be tough to race in.
I felt strong and ready at the starting line and when the gun sounded I ran okay, logging the first mile and a half at my pre-planned 7:00/mile. But the next mile is where everyone has the problem. "Hospital Hill" is a 200ft climb over a little less than a mile, with portions of it at a 4% grade. Not a killer if you're out jogging - but a little tough in a race. And the heat & humidity made it a real challenge. I managed to keep my pace at about 7:00/mile, but I really began to notice my heart rate SOAR at approx 187bpm. The high heart rate didn't bother me, I mean it's a race right? What concerned me was I couldn't get it to decrease on downhills ... it pretty much stayed elevated.
Although breathing hard, I felt fine until about mile 3.25. My pace plan had slipped a little, however it wasn't horrible. But when you turn onto 39th Street, there is immediately another 100ft incline over 1/2 mile. And with my heart rate now at 192bpm, my stomach killing me, and my will power lost somewhere in the second mile ... I kinda gave up and let the course and the heat get the best of me. I walked. Then ran. And walked. Then ran. And WALKED ... IN A FRIGGIN' 10K!!!!!!!!!!! To say that I was disappointed with myself would be a huge understatement.
Crown Center fountains near the Finish Line
I WAS NOT UPSET WITH MYSELF BECAUSE OF THE TIME OR FINISHING PLACE ... I was upset because all I ask of myself and the people close to me to do is give their best effort. Yesterday was not my best and felt like I let myself down.
But a funny thing happened when I checked the finishing times from the race. It turns out that high temps really drove finishing times down. There were only 15 runners in the whole race with a finishing time under a 7:00/mile ... for a 10K!!! When I searched and found myself, to my surprise my 45:32 was fast enough for 26th place overall and also ... to win my age group! Wow, that was really unexpected. It was the first time I ever won my age group in a race and it was a pretty big deal to me!!!
Now, I would absolutely be lying if I told you the 1st place finish didn't take the sting out of my performance a little ... but only a little. I don't at all want to sound ungrateful or "spoiled" with my time, but I still pretty much gave up when the going got tough yesterday - something I usually don't do and still don't know why I did. But all in all it was a good day. I got to run with my wife, who by the way ran a great race and you can read about here at Slowly Tri-Ing. Plus, it was a beautiful day to be out running and I am thankful for that! But I don't ever want to quit like that again. I would rather run 2:00 below my average pace and have fun than quit on myself. Guess I just had a bad day, but tomorrow will be better!
... be great today!
